Each block added after the one containing a transaction, making it progressively harder to reverse.
Exchanges require a number of confirmations before crediting a deposit — a handful on Bitcoin, more on chains where reorganisations are cheaper. Chains with fast finality (Solana, most proof-of-stake networks) reach practical irreversibility in seconds.
