Any cryptocurrency other than bitcoin.
The term dates from when bitcoin was the only significant coin and everything else was an alternative. It is still used for the whole non-bitcoin market, though ethereum is often treated separately in analysis. Altcoins as a group are more volatile than bitcoin and tend to fall harder in downturns and rise faster in strong markets.
