Proof of work
A consensus mechanism in which miners compete to solve a computational puzzle for the right to add the next block.
Bitcoin uses proof of work. Security comes from the cost of the computation: rewriting history would require redoing the work faster than the entire network. The block reward that pays miners halves roughly every four years.
